Yonge Street Mission is a Christian faith-based not-for-profit community called to demonstrate God’s love, peace and justice to those living with economic, social and spiritual poverty in Toronto. Community Services is seeking a candidate who would enjoy engaging with a wide variety of community members and volunteers, and would like to make a significant impact on this vibrant, diverse community.
The successful candidate will develop skills in program planning, development and delivery and in customer service and administrative areas in an environment where we value empowering community members. You will learn about case management and the dynamics of operating a Food Bank.
This is a one-year training position (30 hours a week).
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Assist with program planning and delivery to meet the needs of marginalized adults in consultation with community members, stakeholders and staff, including referral and some advocacy related to housing and employment issues
- Help to develop programs, special events and projects fostering effective opportunities for community members to improve their quality of life, building relationships with community members that create confidence and trust and challenge adults to seek their full potential
- Provide administrative support to the adult program and the Food Bank, helping to organize reports, community member files, and committee minutes
- Assist with ordering food, checking in food bank users and assist with food selection
- Assist in creating flyers, posters, calendars, etc.
- Attend team and staff meetings; connect with other agencies and government organizations and network in the community to keep abreast of resources and current trends
- Maintain accurate and timely program records, budgets, statistics and reports
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have the following skills and training:
- Must be a current recipient of Ontario Works
- Some customer service/program delivery experience with socially isolated adults and families
- Enthusiasm for creative transformative community programs
- Ability to work as a team with staff, student interns and volunteers
- Effective written and oral communication skills and computer literacy
- Multicultural and multifaith sensitivity
- Good interpersonal skills: conflict resolution skills
- Organizational and administrative skills
- Ability to work some evenings
- A police check will be required / First aid training is an asset
- Driver’s licence would be an asset
- Demonstrated commitment to YSM’s mission and values
