Since 1896, we’ve worked on the front lines of poverty in Toronto, helping as many people as possible to turn their lives around. The hope and healing we offer is based solely on individual need, regardless of ethnicity, economic status, gender, religion, sexual orientation or social condition. Get a quick overview of our programs below.
YSM’s Community Centre receives more than 88,000 visits annually to such programs as Daycare, Drop-Ins, and After School and Breakfast Clubs. Our visitors of all ages acquire skills they need for school, work and life. They receive significant support for difficult life transitions. And they find healing and hope.
“I always feel the staff and other women are looking out for me. That is so important, because I am totally alone in Canada. Whenever I achieve something, like completing my training course, I run straight to YSM to celebrate with my friends in the Women & Family Program.”
YSM’s Evergreen Centre focuses on the complex needs of Toronto’s street-involved youth ages 16 through 24. Here, these young people find a place to belong, someone to talk to, and people who genuinely care. They can access counselling, health care and computers, and get help with housing and employment preparation.
“A couple of years ago, I was a hot-tempered young man who got into a lot of fights. Since joining the Martial Arts group at Evergreen, I’ve learned to control my temper and use that energy in a positive manner.”
YSM’s Double Take thrift store has earned a reputation as one of Toronto’s premiere, gently used clothing, furniture and housewares outlets. At Double Take, we employ community residents, enhance job skills and provide training, and offer quality, affordable clothing for low-income families and individuals.
“The Double Take staff is friendly and professional, and the store is extremely well organized. It is inspiring to see a social enterprise being run so efficiently, and the store is one of the best-managed social enterprises I have seen. I have no doubt that Double Take will continue to be a success and remain an integral part of the community.”
