The Yonge Street Mission exists so that all the poor and vulnerable in Toronto that we encounter will experience God’s love, peace, and justice at a level that represents the highest stewardship of the resources invested.
The Yonge Street Mission will work in partnership toward the realization of the end of chronic poverty in Toronto.
Our CORE VALUES:
TRANSFORMATION – We joyfully journey with people toward sustainable change.
COLLABORATION – We actively leverage and implement the best contributions of all.
INNOVATION – We continuously evolve our methods toward better outcomes.
ACCOUNTABILITY – We honour the trust placed in us by meeting our commitments.
COMMUNICATION – We use language to intentionally build understanding, unity and trust.
CELEBRATION – We have much to celebrate…and so we do…often.
SINCE OPENING OUR DOORS IN 1896, THE YONGE STREET MISSION HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE, HELPING PEOPLE FROM EVERY WALK OF LIFE TO RISE OUT OF POVERTY.
And yet, in spite of our efforts – and those of others dedicated to the cause – poverty is still the reality for 500,000 people in our city. And, another more than 1.5 million are teetering on the brink by living pay cheque to pay cheque.
If nothing changes, this relentless cycle of chronic poverty will continue to accelerate, trapping more and more people each day.
This is not something we must accept as inevitable; the resources to make a real and lasting difference already exist. If we recognize the root causes and underlying systemic issues of chronic poverty – and if we change our approach – there is hope!
The Yonge Street Mission is committed to eradicating chronic poverty in Toronto in one generation. Yet we recognize that poverty is too complex and diverse for one organization to conquer alone – we need to collaborate.
Our goal is embodied in our vision for vibrant communities of healthy, fully engaged citizens who can sustain themselves and their families. This vision is fuelled by our belief in the dignity and value of each and every human being. Our approach addresses the root causes and systemic barriers of poverty with a flexible, carefully structured service model of holistic care.
It is possible to realize this kind of a city – if we work together. Nelson Mandela said, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
Together, let’s get it done. Here’s our plan.
