Yonge Street Mission is seeking an Human Resources (HR) Generalist Volunteer! Role Overview:
The HR Generalist Volunteer role will assist Yonge Street Mission’s (YSM) People and Culture (Human Resources), providing professional HR advice and research assistance. Responsibilities include project management, policy and process development, and general administrative support. We’re looking for someone with HR experience and a good understanding of Canadian HR practices, including Ontario employment law, contract obligations, and policy development. You should be a team player who is focused, efficient, personable, and reliable.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with the drafting of policy, interpretation and application
- Assist with research to inform policy within the nonprofit context
- Provide HR advice in alignment with relevant employment legislations
- Participate in HR projects as needed
- Attend all volunteer orientation and training sessions as required
- All volunteers shall adhere to all YSM volunteer processes, policies and guidelines
Qualifications/Experience:
- 3-5 years progressive HR work experience
- Knowledge of relevant Canadian or Ontario employment legislation, i.e. ESA, OHSA and its regulations, Human Rights code, etc.
- Must have experience with policy writing, interpretation, and application
- Experience with project management
- Experience with research (eg. HR best practices)
- Work experience within a Christian context is an asset
- Strong administrative skills
- Demonstrated tact and diplomacy with highly confidential information
- Excellent English communication skills – verbal and written
- Strong multi-tasking and organizational skills while remaining detail oriented
- Experience working in ethnically diverse and low income communities
- Demonstrated commitment to principles of cultural competency, social justice, anti-oppression, equity and inclusion
- Creative thinker, adaptable, and collaborative; friendly and approachable
- Ability to consistently work independently with little supervision
- Very capable, motivated, mature individual who could devote time to this position
Hours of Position/Location:
- This is a virtual position and expected to be done off-site.
- This role is flexible in hours. Volunteers can expect to spend 4-8 hours per week supporting YSM in this role.
