Little Trinity Anglican Church's Journey

Before partnering with the Yonge Street Mission (YSM) Community Development (CD) Team, Little Trinity Anglican Church, affectionately known as “Little T,” found itself at a crossroads. Despite being a cornerstone of Corktown for over 180 years, the church was grappling with how to serve a rapidly changing community that many of its congregants didn’t reside in. With the social and physical landscape evolving around them, Little T was left questioning their role and wondering how they could truly make a difference.

Recognizing the need for guidance, Little T engaged with the YSM CD Team and utilized the “Faith Communities Leading Change” toolkit. This resource, along with YSM’s dedicated staff, helped the church identify the gifts and assets within their congregation and community. Over 30 passionate congregants participated in this process, conducting in-depth research, meeting with various community groups, and surveying neighbourhoods from Moss Park to West Donlands. This comprehensive effort allowed them to gain a clearer understanding of the community’s needs and how Little T could best serve.

Through prayerful discernment and a collaborative “Sensemaking Session,” Little T identified two key areas to focus on: food security and fostering a sense of belonging. This led to the creation of the Little Trinity Good Food Market, a project that has since flourished. Initially planned as a summer pilot, the market’s success inspired the congregation to continue it year-round. The market not only provides affordable produce but also serves as a hub for community activities, including live music and craft circles.

As of June 2024, the market has served over 700 individuals with $5,000 worth of affordable fruits and vegetables sold and over $500 donated to local charity. Over $600 worth of ‘pay it forward’ tokens have been purchased as well. 40 unique volunteers, some of which do not attend Little Trinity Anglican Church, are involved with the market.

Thanks to the partnership with YSM’s CD Team, Little T has not only deepened their understanding of the community but also established a meaningful and impactful way to serve their neighbours.
