As part of National Volunteer Week in Canada, YSM celebrated the contributions of our many amazing volunteers. Did you know that last year, 1,751 volunteers gave an incredible 39,070 hours to make many of YSM’s programs and services possible? We couldn’t do our work without them!
Why do these volunteers give their time?
“I love to volunteer at YSM because I get to make a real connection with the community and kids. I’m happy to get to help them start their journey in computer literacy and see a bright smile every time they get a question right.”
— Kaaviya, a volunteer at our Family Services’ Computer Lab

“I saw an opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of underserved communities by providing sustainable, integrated, and evidence-based spine care. Clients value the one-on-one care and connection which is often missing from their lives. Over the past two years, I have gained more than I ever imagined, growing not only as a clinician but also as a person.”
— Dr. Ailin, a chiropractor who volunteers to provide medical care at our Evergreen Health Centre
“My motivation for volunteering lies in the opportunity to foster connections within the community and experience the joyful atmosphere among the YSM staff, my fellow volunteers, and the clients we serve.”
— J.D., meal prep volunteer at our Evergreen Centre for Vulnerable Youth

“It brings me great joy knowing I can use my skills to participate in YSM’s efforts. We should all strive to get involved more in our communities however we can. Any and every effort is highly needed and can make a positive impact in someone’s life.”
— Andreea, volunteer at YSM’s Double Take thrift store
“YSM embodies respect and care for all, and volunteering here has given me the opportunity to be a part of a space that reveres the community. I have been shaped by the level of dignity and compassion that’s rooted in every interaction.”
— Lindsay, YSM Food Bank volunteer

“I believe in the mission — especially in terms of the youth, being in formative years. Doing something for youth, helping them out, is something that interested me. I feel very satisfied in the happiness one gets by serving others, by giving. Youth come here in bad shape at times, with a lot of turmoil in their past, and here they make it more comfortable for them. They give them facilities free of cost. I don’t think I’ve found anywhere else where we are creating such a safe haven for youth.”
— Vinod, Evergreen Centre for Vulnerable Youth food prep volunteer
